Harmonizing the Workplace: Lessons from My Journey

Written by: Agbana Shalom

Once upon a time, in a bustling office where creativity flowed as freely as coffee, I found myself amidst a diverse group of colleagues. We weren't your typical office workers; we were performers, actors, singers, and dancers. Our workspace had an open layout, which meant that we were always together, rehearsing for our upcoming performances. Little did we know that this arrangement would bring both blessings and challenges.

In this vibrant workplace, the advantage was clear – our unity enhanced teamwork. If I stumbled in my role, help was merely a glance away. Friendships blossomed, and we formed bonds that transcended office hours. But every coin has its flip side. The downside was equally evident – our personal lives were laid bare for all to see. Everyone wanted to know everyone else's story, whether it concerned them or not. This openness fueled gossip, bred jealousy, and led to backstabbing. Such drama might sound like the norm in office settings, but in our world, it was a double-edged sword.

Picture this: Eight hours a day, five days a week, we rehearsed together. What should have been moments of collaboration and support often devolved into arguments and walkouts. Tempers flared, leaving a trail of unresolved disputes. Sometimes, the director had to step in, and roles were reshuffled to restore order. The saddest part was the talent that went unnoticed. We all knew who would shine in certain roles, but connections and favoritism often trumped merit. The leadership resisted outside opinions, stifling growth and innovation. As time passed, the spirit that once fueled our performances dwindled. The joy we found in teamwork faded, and the magic that drew us to the stage lost its sparkle. It was one of the reasons I eventually bid farewell to that organization.

In the workplace, where tasks are performed and careers are built, one word reigns supreme: "teamwork." Surprisingly, despite its importance, it's often overlooked. Employees compete, betray trust, and defy authority. These traits are usually found among those who have influential connections, rendering them untouchable. But rebellion should have no place in a harmonious workplace. Unity in diversity should be the goal. Employers must recognize each employee's strengths and encourage their growth. Only then can creativity flourish, and collaboration truly thrive.

Statistics tell us that approximately 27% of employees leave their organizations due to these issues. It's a staggering number, a testament to the damage unchecked disunity can cause. Workshops and outings can help mend the rifts in the team. Smart and talented employees alone can't ensure a great performance. Success comes when we understand when to stand out and when to blend in, to lead and to follow. This balance elevates teamwork and boosts profits.

In the world of CliftonStrengths, organizations that focus on nurturing their employees' strengths and celebrate their achievements pave the way for a culture of continuous improvement. And so, the story goes – in the heart of every workplace, a melody of unity and collaboration should reign, with each employee playing their unique note. It's a harmonious symphony where everyone is a star, and the performance is a resounding success.

Written by: Emmanuel Kwesi It's no secret that interns are often undervalued and underappreciated in the workplace. They are seen as temporary, expendable workers and are often given the most menial and undesirable tasks. They are often not given the same level of respect or consideration as regular employees, and they are often not given the same opportunities for advancement or growth. This situation is not only unfair to interns but also detrimental to the workplace as a whole. When...
